![]() I've always positioned myself to live below my means, as I was a single mother and had no one else to count on as my parents raised their children and didn't owe me anything once I was an adult. ![]() I'm not sure if my experience will help, but I would like to tell you. I also have a safety net of moving back to the Bay Area to my family home, but that's a last resort if/when I need to come back. Luckily, their stocks have allowed me to take this leave without any intention of taking up another corporate job in the near future.Įdit: adding that I have a good amount in retirement funds: 401K & IRAs that I will plan on *not* touching (maybe another $40-50K). I have come to the conclusion that tech in the Bay Area is not fulfilling enough, no matter how much they pay me if I don't control my own time and life. Budgeting my cost of living in Southeast Asia with that amount of money could potentially last me 1-3 years without anymore income coming in depending on how strict I am with my finances. ![]() My salary at the moment is around $120K before taxes (business role in SF tech scene), but my plan is to move somewhere with very low cost of living in Southeast Asia (where my family is originally from but no longer have physical or familial ties to) to have some time to myself to explore the concept of resting and realize what I want to really do with my life. I am about to quit without something else lined up with about $40-50K USD saved up. If you don't want to be two tight on your budget when you quit, potentially, you can start applying for other jobs now while you are still working at your current job. Since your situation will be different then all of us here that will be more helpful. I would just recommend you look at your current expenses and base how much you need to save on that. Ended up getting a new job with 3 months so it was perfect. I started to apply for new job right away. I also had a very low rent payment, lived with a roommate, and was single at the time. I took all my vacation days/pay before I left. I had about 2K saved up when I quit a job that gave me burnout and made me physically sick. Set a much lower budget then what I could afford on the current salary. Remember it won't be for ever, but for now it's best to cut down on expenses. Get rid of any subscriptions or leisure expenses. I first cut down my expenses as much as possible.
